Whether you have lived in Birmingham for years or have only visited for a weekend, I’m sure you’d agree that Birmingham’s Food Scene is one to celebrate. Yes, I may be exaggerating when calling it “unbeatable”, but I do believe it’s one of the best! For today’s blog, I want to spotlight a list of my favorite restaurants that I love visiting on the days that I don’t want to cook. I will have a section for restaurants that are good for balling on a budget as well as options for splurge days! You can also find my go-to order at each spot in case you need help with the menu— and I can be very particular, so you can trust me 😉
Restaurants for Splurging!
1. Tasty Town
This is a fairly new spot in Birmingham and it checks all of the boxes! Tasty Town is a Greek style restaurant in the heart of the city located right across from railroad park. One of my favorite things about the restaurant is the style of the interiors & the open space. They also accept reservations!
My go-to order at Tasty Town is the classic hummus and pita bread for a starter paired with a Greek salad with grilled chicken. Honestly, you can’t go wrong with any of the options!
2. Bettola
Bettola is an Italian restaurant located in Pepper Place, right across from Jeni’s ice cream. With their immaculate night dining vibes and incredible food, it is a spot that you do not want to miss! Perfect for celebrating birthdays and group events as the meals are easily sharable.
My favorite dish at Bettola is the Quattro Formaggi, a delectable pasta made with a whole lot of cheese and cream (the best!). The margarita pizza is also to die for!
3. Automatic Seafood
Automatic is an amazing seafood restaurant and oyster bar that is located right off of the interstate on Fifth Ave. The atmosphere is unmatched with the retro style and incredible staff. You will never go thirsty— they are always there to refill your beverage and serve you at any time. It is recommended that you make a reservation a while in advance, however, you can always walk in and pull up to the bar for a more simple date night. Also, keep in mind, the menus change daily so there are always new dishes to try!
Sadly, I am not a huge seafood person, so I favor the simpler option of fish and chips (while they are nothing unique, they are delicious!). Something you must order is the sweet bread appetizer— you won’t regret it!
More Affordable Options!
1. Green House
While Green House, is not the cheapest place out there, it is a great option if you are looking to treat yourself but not break the bank! My friends and I have been going to Green House for years and have yet to fall out of love with it. It is located in Edgewood and has many seating options both inside and outside.
My go-to at Green House is the Kid’s Salmon and Brussels Sprouts. If I am feeling crazy, I also add a side of sweet potato fries which are always crispy and seasoned perfectly. Highly recommend!
2. Acapulco
Acapulco is also one of my friends and I’s go-to spot for a week day dinner outing. It is you classic local Mexican restaurant located on Green Springs right across from Publix. You an always count on them to have seating open as it is a fairly large restaurant and their staff is amazing! The food comes out almost within minutes after ordering— unbeatable!
If I am trying to save, I love to get two Chicken Enchilada Verde A La Carte. If you know me, you know I love to order this meal at any Mexican restaurant I go to, and I believe Acapulco has some of the best!
3. Real & Rosemary
Similar to Green House, Real & Rosemary is not necessarily the price equivalent to cheap fast food, but it is a little more of a affordable option if you are eating out! R&R is a chain, so you can find it in Homewood, at The Summit in Vestavia, and in downtown Crestline. This is a great family and group spot as there is something on the menu for everyone!
My order will forever be the Southwest Salad with Chicken— it is SO GOOD. If I’m extra hungry or sharing with a group, I love the Sweet Potato Dippers. They are a fan favorite!
In case you are looking for more spots to visit, here is a list of honorable mentions that are also incredible options:
- The Essential
- Lady Bird Taco
- Chop N’ Fresh
- Post Office Pies
- North Italia
- Soho Social
- East West
I seriously could go on and on!
Let me know your go-to spots using the Share Your Ideas! form! If you have never visited Birmingham before, just know that you simply can’t go wrong. The best part about the food scene in this city is that there is a great spot on every corner, so if there is ever a wait at one place, you can walk down the blog and try the next! While I love talking about cooking and saving money through meal prep, I still fully believe in treating yourself to a fun meal out— especially with friends! It’s just a matter of setting up good routines and money saving boundaries.
Cheers to good times and great food!
